About Iceland Roads
What this is
Iceland Roads is an independent project that combines data from multiple official Icelandic sources into a single, clear view of driving conditions across Iceland. It translates raw meteorological codes and road condition data into plain-English answers to the question every driver asks: should I drive this road today?
The site is not affiliated with Vegagerðin (Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration), Vedur.is (Icelandic Met Office), or any government agency. It is an independent aggregation and interpretation layer over publicly available data.
Data sources
All data comes from official and open sources. Each source is polled every 10 minutes and cached at the edge for fast loading.
Road surface conditions, incidents, F-road status, WFS geometry and speed limits
Weather observations from automatic stations across Iceland
Weather forecast data (7-day, hourly)
Kp index and aurora forecast
Fuel prices at stations across Iceland
Baseline speed limits and road classification
How the scoring works
The "Should I Go?" score on each route page combines road surface conditions (50%), wind speed (30%), and general weather (20%) into a 0–100 score. Roads with scores above 70 are marked GOOD, 40–69 CAUTION, 1–39 DANGER, and 0 CLOSED. This is a guide, not a guarantee — always verify with official sources.
