The Highlands require 4x4 vehicles and are only open from late June to September. Landmannalaugar, Þórsmörk, and Askja are accessed via rough F-roads with river crossings. Check road.is before attempting.

Kverkfjöll
Glacier-covered mountain range on the northern edge of Vatnajökull. Ice caves and hot springs. Remote. 4x4 required.
Herðubreið
Queen of Icelandic Mountains
Table mountain rising 1682m above the highland desert. Symmetrical flat top. Surrounded by lava fields. 4x4 required.

Fire Gorge
Largest volcanic canyon in the world. 40km long, up to 600m wide. Part of the Katla volcanic system. Ófærufoss waterfall inside. 4x4 recommended.
